April A Taylor

Artist research
April A Taylor
An American-born artist known for her love of dark horror and movie-informed photography originating from Detroit, Michigan and taking inspiration from Clive Barker, Chris Mars and various zombie movies and old ghost stories. I have more interest in her recent “Dark Europe” works depicting various urban locations surrounding the areas of the bleak and macabre. What is really enticing about Taylor’s work is her flare of the dramatic and ability to produce foreboding scenes by utilizing the lighting and space of her subjects.

These works largely comprise of dark alleyways, gothic buildings, urban decay, graveyards, frozen corpses and gasmasks which serve as proficient motifs throughout her work. She produces a great sense of fear, dread and isolation in these images the appearance of a great light flooding through a decrepit window reveals a profoundly isolated and desolate estate. Its aspects like these that I seek to inform my work with and their darkness and vibrancy can serve to creat all the more dramatic atmosphere.
