Introduction to "Grids Layers and Reflections" (Fine art and media pathways)

11.09.2012

We where introduced to the first project "Grids Layers and Reflections" and have begun the first roundabout pathways the first two sessions being fine art and media. the morning session (the former) included utilising paint and ruler (along with other medium and utensils) to distort, colourise and enhance effects of photographs, postcards and scrap workpieces.

My first piece was Goya's portrayal of the shootings in response to the popular uprising in Madrid, I had already known that I had wanted to keep the image and maybe enhance the composition in some way. This first piece was successful as I believe the colours compliment the scene the purple mixture provides contrast with the lighter brown-yellow tone which I had scratched back into which has created a blurred effect. The second piece I had layered it with red and purple which I intended to use to blend with the rock formations in the foreground.
The third piece I intended to enhance the darker aspects (the trees) with blue and emphasise light with brighter, more vivid orange and yellow. the fourth was an image of van gogh's influential "at eternity's gate" the finale piece was produced reusing old work and I had fun using paint to create multicoloured layers and scratch back in to emphasise various aspects words such as "devious" or other powerful lexis was intensified
The second portion of the day was followed the media pathway each was given a long strip of film each section pertaining to a microsecond in between small notches (with around 21 sections making a full second). Having seen and been inspired by some of the videos we had been shown I had decided to take a existentialist inspired idea.
The concept revolves along the idea of a person waking up to observe the world viewing it with uncertainty and confusion an aspect Existentialism was built on. The concept is fairly simple but appropriate for the theme and felt this would be an interesting and creative topic totally suited for this kind of media. It started with largely blackening the frames making it abstract and giving it a sense of emptiness which was followed by the fluctuating appearance of an eye.
I felt the eye needed to be more animated and so had a number of frames showing it blinking and the final frames was devoted to the the simple question "WHY" echoing humans need for knowledge and order in a chaotic and confusing world.
